Figure Drawing: Design and Invention by Michael Hampton
Figure Drawing: Design and Invention by Michael Hampton is As a 35 year old professional artist, i can tell you it's never too late to strengthen your fundamentals! AFter studying values, painting, and computer programs for the last 8 or so years it hit me that what was holding me back the most was my drawing, the thing i thought i was always good at since 5th grade. Ends up I wasn't that good. This book perfectly addresses all of my weak points i had (have) in figure drawing, both in copying and drawing from imagination, which is how to establish dynamic, human form. Absolutely my new favorite art resource book. THank you Mr. Michael Hampton.
Figure Drawing: Design and Invention by Michael Hampton is Great figure drawing book for those looking for the skill to draw from life & imagination. 1/2 anatomy, 1/2 drawing technique. Perfect! The only problem I have with the book - and it's the problem I have with almost every figure drawing book I've come across so far - is that it stops short of polished/complete figure drawings. Gesture, sketched figure... that's it. I'm still looking for the book that gets me from the sketched figure to a finished, realistic figure drawing.
Figure Drawing: Design and Invention by Michael Hampton is I've heard so many great things about this book from animators and illustrators. Being an aspiring artist myself, I've been searching for good materials to aid me on my journey towards self-improvement, and when I came across this book, I knew I had to get it. Save for a weird brown stain on the back cover, it arrived in mint condition. I'm only in chapter 2 but so far, the book covers everything you need to know about basic figure drawing and then some, and explains it as if you were in a classroom. Very easy to comprehend, and there's plenty of visual aid to further solidify your understanding of what the author is trying to get across. However, I wouldn't recommend this book for absolute beginners with no knowledge about anatomy or the basis of gesture drawing, because you will be stranded and everything will start sounding garbled. Some sections need additional explanations, as I feel they're too brief, but thankfully the book provides adequate space for notes. The book feeds you a lot of information but it doesn't give you exercises to practice on for each sub-topic, so you're kind of on your own in that regard. Again, not for absolute newbies. But if you're acquainted with the lessons, and you follow the guidelines listed in the book and practice with it, I guarantee you'll find your sketches improving quickly.
Figure Drawing: Design and Invention by Michael Hampton is I have bought many figure drawing books and if I could only recommend one this would be it with out a doubt. This book reads like a private class. Michael Hampton takes you from the basics and builds on them all the way to the complex.I love the way he breaks down the forms in the body into simple shapes and the way he color codes the muscle groups making them easy to differentiate. If you are interested in figure drawing or even if you have been at it for several years this book is one of the best. For me it is personally the best.It provides great reference material and a great understanding of how the body moves through space. As a ceramic sculptor this is invaluable and it is a book I always have with me when I am sculpting.Well worth the price. I can recommend this book enough.
