The novice with a musical instrument is frequently taught to play simple melodies as quickly as possible, well before he learns the most elemental scratchings at the surface of music theory. The resultant self-satisfaction, pride in accomplishment, can be a significant means of providing motivation. And all from mimicking an instructor's "DO-as-I-do..." Mimicry is prerequisite for developing creativitity. We learn the use of our tools by mimicry. Then we can use those tools for creativity. To this end I would offer the budding artist the opportunity to memorize or mimic (rotelike, if you wish) the making of "pictures." Read more

Draw 50 Animals: The Step-by-Step Way to Draw Elephants, Tigers, Dogs, Fish, Birds, and Many More... by Lee J. Ames is I bought this book for my special needs daughter in the hope that it would introduce her in the art of drawing and help her to easily understand each step in drawing animals. And it did! A few days ago she surprised me by drawing a cat out of apples. The book also helped her in focusing on details and to understand proportions. I highly recommend the book.

Draw 50 Animals: The Step-by-Step Way to Draw Elephants, Tigers, Dogs, Fish, Birds, and Many More... by Lee J. Ames is This was a gift for a young one in our family, nearly eight, who loves to draw and bit-by-bit is acquiring various techniques.I chose this book because I like the approach it encourages-- to visually analyze a subject to basic shapes, re-assemble them and gradually introduce details. Constructing with simple ovals, circles, and arcs helps her learn proportions, like how to locate the ridge of the brow and the bridge of the nose etc.To get her motivated, I tried my own hand at an animal of her choosing. I used to consider myself one of the better artists in 3rd grade, if I say so myself, so I figured my inner Da Vinci was ready after decades of incubation. Well, as my rendition of "Chunky Cat" shows, no book can turn a Cy Twombly into a Rembrandt (but I think its still decent by 3rd grade standards). But this book definitely gives a good framework and examples for practicing and thinking about animal forms. My only wish is maybe for one more step for some of the examples, before all the details are in.

Draw 50 Animals: The Step-by-Step Way to Draw Elephants, Tigers, Dogs, Fish, Birds, and Many More... by Lee J. Ames is I bought this book for my 6 year old twin granddaughters. But I love it too! We are all learning to draw animals this way. One of my granddaughters is a fan of horses and she drew a passable horse based on the instructions. I will be using this book for a long time, and so will they. In fact, once you see how it's done, you can figure out how to use the same technique for different animals not in the book. Just visualize the parts of the animal and the proportions of the parts to each other. Draw the basic shapes, then add the details. I recommend this highly.

Draw 50 Animals: The Step-by-Step Way to Draw Elephants, Tigers, Dogs, Fish, Birds, and Many More... by Lee J. Ames is This is exactly what I wanted. It's simple and basic and the perfect way to get started drawing animals. There's very little text which I find is a plus since I didn't want to spend on a book that had pages of explanations on drawing tools and paper, etc. This book gets right to the point with visual explanations on how to draw. It's a good place to start and when I'm comfortable I can go to a more advanced book. It's a good starting point for both kids and adults. Wish I had something like this when I was a kid!
